Kryptonics

Kryptonics Star*Trac Blue 60mm

The original Kryptonics line up was called by the name 'Star-Trac'. I have one of their first ads, it's headed 'Star-Trac - Tomorrows wheels today' Kryptonics wasn't even the 'brand' at the time, just the manufacturers name.

As described in the advert-
Blue - 80a - Fast and smooth with good traction

  • Diameter - 60mm
  • Width - 45mm
  • Inset - 0mm
  • Durometer - 80
  • Date - 1977

Kryptonics Star*Trac Green 60mm

A good wheels for slalom if I recall correctly. As described in the advert-
Green - 85a - (translucent) Fast, harder, less forgiving than Blue

  • Diameter - 60mm
  • Width - 45mm
  • Inset - 0mm
  • Durometer - 85
  • Date - 1977

Kryptonics Star*Trac Red 60mm.

Were these the first wheels with a core? If you look closely, you will see a metal washer built into all these Star*Trac wheels where the outer bearing sits. I used to think this was rust from where bearing had been fitted in the past, but no, there is a washer in there.

As described in the advert-
Red - 75a - Smooth rapid acceleration and prolonged momentum, our fastest formula

  • Diameter - 60mm
  • Width - 45mm
  • Inset - 0mm
  • Durometer - 78
  • Date - 1977

Kryptonics Star*Trac Orange 60mm.

Orange - 85a - (translucent) Harder, less forgiving than yellow with similar performance

  • Diameter - 60mm
  • Width - 45mm
  • Inset - 0mm
  • Durometer - 85
  • Date - 1977

Kryptonics Star*Trac Yellow 60mm

This was described as a 'downhill' wheel. Ultra soft, this was designed to go slow! So that you could cruise down long hills without picking up too much speed. Nice idea.

As described in the advert-
Yellow - 75a - Ultimate traction and slower for steep and/or rough surfaces

  • Diameter - 60mm
  • Width - 45mm
  • Inset - 0mm
  • Durometer - 75
  • Date - 1977

Kryptonics Wide*Trac Green

Missing
Ths was a wide wheel, similar in dimensions to the Sims Bowlrider. I have never seen one, I know someone in the US who has. I'd love to find a set.

See it at the back of this early group shot.
Can anyone add any more information?

  • Diameter - 57mm
  • Width - 60mm
  • Inset - 0mm
  • Durometer - 85
  • Date - 1977

Kryptonics Star*Trac Blue 70mm

Kryptonics Star*Trac Green 70mm

Bottle Green and beautiful. These were my Holy Grail of wheels for so long, I never expected to find any. Then I find three sets at once, that's how it goes!

No metal bearing seat in these harder Greens and Orange wheels.

  • Diameter - 70mm
  • Width - 50mm
  • Inset - 10mm
  • Durometer - 85
  • Date - 1977

Kryptonics Star*Trac Red 70mm

The original 'Big Reds'. these were massive in summer 1977. Everybody wanted them. Fast, smooth and that great swooshy sound as you carved them. A revolution. Probably the first time a manufacturer had achieved the magic combination of a soft wheel that would roll over anything, but had a high rebound, so was fast too.
  • Diameter - 70mm
  • Width - 50mm
  • Inset - 10mm
  • Durometer - 78
  • Date - 1977

Kryptonics Star*Trac Orange 70mm

Don't know what was different between these and the Greens. The specs are identical, unless there was some difference in the formulation.

  • Diameter - 70mm
  • Width - 50mm
  • Inset - 10mm
  • Durometer - 85
  • Date - 1977

Kryptonics Star*Trac Orange 70mm
Slalom Specials

I thought these were copies until I heard from someone who lived in Kryptonic land, Boulder Colorado, back in the day, that the factory would lathe down some wheels for the slalom team, making them narrower. Well, these are professionally lathed front and back and are slimmer than my regular Orange set.

  • Diameter - 70mm
  • Width - 50mm
  • Inset - 10mm
  • Durometer - 85
  • Date - 1977

Kryptonics Blue 60mm

The end of 1977 saw the release of the next generation of Kryptonics wheels. The Star*Trac name was dropped and a thick radius front edge design replaced the old model.
The name changed from saying 'Kryptonics Wheels' to just Kryptonics. The font used was changed to the familiar 'Pac-Man' style, it was recessed and not raised on the wheel front. Probably to keep it from rubbing off, as always happened on the earlier models.
A new 65mm size was introduced. The Yellow and Orange formulations were discontinued.

The hardness of the Blues went up to 86a

  • Diameter - 60mm
  • Width - 45mm
  • Inset - 0mm
  • Durometer - 86
  • Date - 1977

Kryptonics Green C 60mm

Great unused set still in the can they were sold in. The can contained a guarentee card, instructions on how to fit the bearings, spacers and washers, a sticker, and Kryptonics own brand bearings.
These are so minty that you can still see the light oil on the bearing seal.
